Silicon
As a chemical element, the silicon atom is referred to as the symbol "Si", the atomic number 14 and has an atomic weight of 28. It is the second most abundant chemical element in the earth’s crust, just behind oxygen.

Silicon Powder / Micronized Silicon
Metallurgical silicon is typically produced in a size of 0-100 mm, but for most applications further size reduction is required. The optimum particle size depends strongly on the final application.

Silica Fume / Microsilica
Silica fume is a co-product of silicon or ferrosilicon production, consisting of ultrafine (sub-micron), amorphous, non-porous, perfectly spherical silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles, with purity levels of 85 to 99 %.

Ferrosilicon
Ferrosilicon (FeSi) is an alloy of iron and silicon that is principally used in steelmaking for deoxidation and as an alloying component. Elkem is one of the largest suppliers of premium-grade ferrosilicon ferroalloys worldwide, and we’re ready to help you identify the best product for your application.

Grain Refiner
Grain refiners are a class of cerium-containing inoculants for steel that reduce grain size and increase grain uniformity, with consequent improvements in mechanical properties and product quality.

Silicon Carbide
Silicon carbide (SiC) is a synthetic silicon and carbon mineral compound, generally produced in electrical resistance furnaces at high temperatures of 1700 – 2500°C.

Boron Carbide
In the manufacture of refractory products, boron carbide (B4C) is used as an anti-oxidant during formulation, while in high-performance ceramics and abrasives, it is used to impart wear-resistance. Boron carbide from Elkem is carefully sourced to ensure consistent quality, and our specialists are always available to advise on your application.

Ferrosilicon Nitride
Ferrosilicon nitride (FeSi3N4) is a refractory additive used in silicon-carbide and alumina-based refractories, such as taphole mixes for blast furnaces. In these roles, it provides resistance against chemical corrosion, physical erosion and thermal shock, so increasing the holding time of the furnace.

Fused Silica
Fused silica is made of very high purity crystal silica (quartz sand), melted by fusion in electrical arc ovens at temperatures of 1800-2000 ℃ and then cooled sufficiently fast to avoid crystallization and obtain transparent amorphous silica (silicon dioxide).

Polymer Additives
THE SIDISTAR™ and SIDISHIELD™ product families are specially developed sustainable additives for rubber, thermoplastic and coating formulations. These multifunctional additives provide improved performance in viscosity control, processing, dispersion, flame retardancy and dynamic fatigue.
